Scottie Pippen vs Dwyane Wade

Scoring:

Dwyane Wade, throughout his career, was always known as a potent scorer. He showcased a wide range of moves, be it slashing to the basket, mid-range jumpers, or even his iconic euro-step. Averaging 22.0 points per game over his 16-season career, Wade peaked as the league’s top scorer in the 2008-2009 season, scoring 30.2 points per game. Scottie Pippen, on the other hand, was not primarily known for his scoring, but he still was a key contributor, averaging 16.1 points per game throughout his career. Pippen’s role was more multifaceted, especially playing alongside Michael Jordan. While Pippen was a consistent scorer and could erupt when needed, Wade’s scoring ability and his role as the primary offensive weapon for the Heat for much of his career gives him the edge in this category.

Playmaking:

Scottie Pippen was one of the premier playmakers of his time, especially for a forward. With a keen sense of the game, excellent court vision, and the ability to run the Bulls’ offense, Pippen averaged 5.2 assists per game in his career, which is impressive for a non-guard. Dwyane Wade, while primarily known for his scoring, also was an adept playmaker, averaging 5.4 assists throughout his career. Wade’s ability to create for his teammates while drawing defenses was commendable. However, considering Pippen’s unique role, especially as a forward, and the system he played in, he holds the advantage over Wade in this category.

Defense:

Defensively, both players were standouts in their positions. Scottie Pippen was renowned for his ability to guard multiple positions, thanks to his size, agility, and understanding of the game. He was a staple on the NBA All-Defensive teams, being selected 10 times in his career. His ability to disrupt passing lanes was also notable, with Pippen averaging 2.0 steals per game over his career. Dwyane Wade, while not having the same defensive accolades as Pippen, was unique in his ability as a shot-blocking guard. Wade averaged almost a block a game (0.8), which is outstanding for a guard. However, when comparing overall defensive impact, Scottie Pippen edges out Wade.

Leadership:

Dwyane Wade is often celebrated for his leadership, especially during the Miami Heat’s championship runs. He was the glue that kept the team together, especially during the formation of the “Big Three” with LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Wade’s willingness to take a step back for the betterment of the team showcased his maturity and leadership qualities. Scottie Pippen, while also a leader, played much of his prime in the shadow of Michael Jordan, the undisputed leader of the Bulls. However, Pippen’s leadership became evident, especially during the 1993-1994 season when Jordan was retired. Given Wade’s role as the central figure in Miami and his leadership during crucial moments, he gets a slight advantage in this category.

Accolades:

Scottie Pippen boasts 6 NBA championships, 7 All-NBA Team selections, 10 All-Defensive Team selections, and 7 All-Star appearances. Additionally, Pippen was also a part of the iconic 1992 “Dream Team”. Dwyane Wade, on the other hand, has 3 NBA championships, 13 All-Star selections, 8 All-NBA Team selections, and 3 All-Defensive Team selections. Both players have had their fair share of individual and team accolades, but Pippen’s six rings and his key role in the dominant Bulls dynasty of the 1990s give him the edge in this category.

Conclusion:

Comparing Scottie Pippen and Dwyane Wade is a testament to how multifaceted the game of basketball is. Both players dominated their eras and positions in different ways. While Wade’s scoring and leadership stand out, Pippen’s defensive prowess and unique role next to the game’s greatest player are hard to overlook. Wade’s prime was scintillating, and he was undoubtedly one of the best shooting guards of his era. Pippen, meanwhile, solidified his legacy as one of the best two-way players and arguably the best sidekick in NBA history. After this in-depth comparison, it’s evident that while both are all-time greats, Scottie Pippen‘s overall impact, especially on the defensive end and his crucial role in a dynasty, gives him a slight edge over Dwyane Wade.

I think Pippen was the better playmaker. He was the primary playmaker on the Bulls.
